Battlestar Galactica Casts Tricia Helfer as Number Six

Tricia Helfer is one of the Battlestar Galactica casts that everybody recognizes right away. Before she played the Cylon humanoid in the re-imagined Battlestar series, she already was an actress and a former model. Discovered by a modeling agency at the age of 17, this woman of German and Norwegian influence soon made a big name for herself.

She won in 1992 the Ford Models' Supermodel of the World Contest, and was signed to the Elite Model Management, and then later on to Trump Model Management, officially retiring from modeling after ten years. She hosted Canada's Next Top Model but did not return on its second season because by then she had to concentrate on her role as the Cylon humanoid in the popular revamped space series.

Tricia played the role of Number Six, a Cylon humanoid, gracing the episodes and becoming part of the regular cast as the series went on to its fourth and final season. Clearly as stunning on photos as is on film, the role of a Cylon capable of evoking human feelings and having memories that can be transferred from one body to another is played beautifully by Helfer.

Casting model or attractive actresses as humanoids and robots is a trend that meets with a certain degree of approval. There was a time where villain roles were given to actors who project the look of a villain. With technology and modern living, even the notion of aesthetics has been challenged. Villains started appearing as attractive males or gorgeous women. Now, audiences are more engrossed in the plot of the story. While the imagination is till much needed to appreciate any kind of literature whether printed or on video that is themed on science fantasy, the use of fitting actors and actresses to portray the roles greatly enhance the experience of the audience.

Tricia as Number Six offers some insight to why she could easily evoke other humans to see her as harmless as a human, but can be calculating and decisive just like a Cylon. Many spectators were even drawn to watching science fantasy not so much because of their enticement with space-themed television programs but precisely because of the presence of people like Helfer in the series. Though it may be criticized that what these kinds of viewers really wanted to see was the alluring actress and not the show itself, these fans soon grew to love not only their favorite model but also the show itself. Casting her for the role of the cyborg helped bring in a new breed of audience to the re-imagined show. Now, old Battlestar fans and this new generation of fans have something to enjoy and to be occupied with.

The success of a television series not only relies on the creativity and ingenuity of the people behind its production. The chosen cast also is very important. Putting a talented artist for the wrong role will not work to anyone's advantage, no matter how skilled the actor is. Putting Tricia Helfer as one of the Battlestar Galactica casts is a great choice for the longevity of the space series.
